Raj Kumar Rishi of Dell comments on the company’s upcoming AI-capable portfolio in India: “AI will become a central part of PCs, use cases still evolving.”

AI will become a central part of PCs

To increase the attractiveness of its XPS laptops and Alienware gaming PCs in markets like India, Dell Technologies announced its newest portfolio of high-end personal computers on Monday, complete with an array of AI features integrated right into the device.

According to Raj Kumar Rishi, Vice President and Managing Director (Consumer and Small Business), Dell Technologies India, “AI will be a transformational aspect in terms of the evolution of PCs, as artificial intelligence becomes a central part of PCs going forward,” which explains why the PC giant is so bullish on AI in its newest generation of PCs.

The emphasis on AI signals a change in the PC market as big brands start implementing the technology more widely.

“The shift will happen over some time, in a few quarters as the hardware and software start rolling out,” Rishi said in an interview with IndianExpress.com on the fringes of the announcement of the new AI-capable PC portfolio in Delhi. It’s not a step function where we can complete the AI enabling and all the features at once. The use cases themselves will not stop changing.

The 14- and 16-inch laptops in the new XPS lineup are equipped with Intel’s AI-ready “Meteor Lake” Core Ultra CPUs and come with an integrated Microsoft Copilot key into the keyboard. The ultra-modern design of the previously released XPS 13 Plus (review), which included an LED function row, flush edge-to-edge keyboards, an invisible smooth touchpad, and the Core Ultra’s neural processing unit (NPU) for onboard AI tasks, is now included on both notebooks. Both the XPS 14 and XPS 16, which will go on sale later this month, have starting prices of Rs 1,99,900 and Rs 2,99,990, respectively.

In addition, Dell has introduced the Alienware m16 R2 and the Inspiron 14 Plus. Both are AI-capable computers, but the Alienware m16 R2 is designed with gamers in mind.

Sales of PCs with generative AI banking peaked during the pandemic, but they started to decline as people went back to work. According to Gartner, PC shipments decreased by around 15% in comparison to the previous year. However, given the AI explosion, PC shipments will inevitably increase. According to market research firm Canalys, 48 million AI-capable PCs—or 18% of all PC shipments—are expected to be shipped globally in 2024.
