During a technical-challenged interview on X space, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, made audacious forecasts on the swift advancement of artificial intelligence (AI). Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)—a term used to describe AI that is more intelligent than humans—could emerge as early as 2026 or even sooner, according to Musk.

In his discussion with Nicolai Tangen, the CEO of Norway’s wealth fund, Musk emphasized the importance of power in enabling AI to reach its full potential. He also shared details on the upcoming version of Grok, the AI chatbot created by his business, xAI, which is expected to finish training by May.

The tech tycoon, who also cofounded OpenAI, bemoaned the lack of cutting-edge chips that were impeding Grok’s ability to improve. He said that the Grok 2 model required an astounding 20,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs for training and that subsequent versions will require considerably more hardware.

Last year, Musk’s company, xAI, surfaced as a competitor to OpenAI, a business with which he had previously worked. Musk said that OpenAI has strayed from its initial charitable goals in favour of profit-driven ones; the company disputes this accusation.

Musk acknowledged that the lack of chips is a major barrier, but he also emphasized how important electrical supply will be to AI’s future progress.

Turning his attention to the automotive industry, Musk reaffirmed the fierce rivalry that Chinese automakers present, referring to them as “the most competitive in the world.” He issued a warning, saying that if trade obstacles were lifted, Chinese competitors might surpass international competitors.

Speaking about the current labour problems, Musk seemed upbeat and indicated that Tesla’s difficulties in Sweden were getting better. Representing Norway’s $1.5 trillion national wealth fund and a major Tesla stakeholder, Tangen said that the company’s leadership and he had recently discussed the company’s operational situation.
